After
the plain alluvial of the Sele, the landscape
primarily introduces him mountainous; but,
attracted by the wild beauty of this coast that
receives character from the variety of his/her
aspects rocky walls that open to the sea with
suggestive caverns, woodpeckers, unpredictable
jumps, slopes verdant or bare and calm
roadsteads we decide to reach the gulf of
Policastro following the rout of the sailors.
The Cilento, in fact, and' the summer
destination of delicious vacations and the
heaven of the recreation boats. It's furnished
of all the conforts.
To our shoulders the crest is seen still
indented of the mountains of the Amalfi's Coasts,
of an intense violet color, and to draw him in
front of us the promontory of point Licosa, that
he/she closes to south the great gulf of
Salerno: the mythical Leucosea or Leucosia, so
called by the goddess that assisted Ulisse in
one of his dramatic castaways: "la bella dal
Tallon di Perla / figlia di Cadauno, Ino
chiamata al tempo / che viveva tra i mortali: or
nel mar gode / divini amori, e Leucosea si
noma". |

On the expensive banks to the goddesses, of which we are interesting there, they relive the ancient legends.
Here the ship of Giasone landed, with on board the plow that would have transformed the distant earths and Orfeo with its lira.
If it didn't disturb us the rhombus of the motors, who knows that we would not be able he anchors to feel his songs. To south Paestums are glimpse as soon as the ruins of Velia, the ancient Elea famous for her school of philosophical. Today the archaeologists are feverishly trying to bring the vestigia of her glorious past to the light. The Eleatica's school, that rose in the VI century a.c. in this part of Great Greece, was characterized by an alive interest for the logical-linguistic problems and on the difficulties that nest in the notions used more commonly. Philosophers as Senofane, Parmenide, Zenone and Melisso belonged you. In that remote times philosophy tried to scientifically explain the myths, but in this earth the myths survive with the strength of the poetry. |

The promontory of point
Licosa doesn't block us the sight. In the handle
to elbow, in front of Salerno, here is Agropoli,
from the white houses that descend gradually
toward the sea and, castled on a high ground,
Castallabate, founded in 1123 by the abbot of
Cava Costabile Gentilcolore. This small country
has an interesting historical center with
capital and picturesque litte raod. On the hill
is visible the angioino-Aragonese castle of the
XII century. As a lot of regions of the Cilento,
in the tall middle-evo Castellabate belonged to
the bay of it Extracts, that possessed in the
zone well eight monasteries, around which the
first inhabited centers rose. The war of the
evening, fought among Angioini and Aragonesi, it
was lethal for the Cilento, and almost all these
towns were destroyed. Giovanna D'Angiò it
redelivered later her to the monks but one
century, 1414, Gregorio VII gave to king
Ladislao of Durazzo, that however it never
administered her, in how much, in the meantime,
to the Angioini they were succed the Aragonesi
ones. |

Going toward the sea is Saint Maria of Castellabate, of which, already in 1102
the church existed. The bluff, on which the sea breaks him with spectacular
foamy effects, is constituted by an ancient it extracts of blocks. The dock
behind point Licosa belongs to St. Mark of Castellabate, in epoch ancient
detachment of the fleet of Miseno. The rests of the Roman dock and a building
are visible strengthened says "the turret." A necropolis exists, also but from
quassù it is hardly identifiable. Also Ogliastro (from oleastrum, wild oil), and
Perdifumo (from foot of river), they have origins the ancient ones, having been
founded around thousand. With a levers veered we go beyond Point Licosa,
important point of reference for the sailors, and we admire one of the widest
and beautiful beaches in Italy. intensely A foamy and white crest in the middle
of the blue sea tells us, that we are to Acciaroli. That, in fact, is the shoal,
that seems mass it waits for for inviting the sailors to the prudence. |

Anchors an indentation in the rock, and here is Casalvelino, a pleasant small
country set on a high ground, but that it has quickly earned today the street of
the sea.
They almost all rise on the hills, the countries of this beautiful region,
because up to the beginning of last century it needed to beware themselves of
the raids of the Saracens and the pirates; on the sea there were not that few
villages of fishermen, and they are these that have received greater impulse to
our days. Ascea and Marina of Pisciotta are a reengagement of it.
Anchors an expanse of beach framed by mountains, and here is Centola, an
uninhabited country perched on a mountain by the horrid beauty. Toward the sea
the landscape does him less sour: it is head Palinuro, the bank where the
mythical helmsman of Enea was buried. Despite the here a lot of modern
constructions, beaches and promontories spread on the sea the atmosphere of the
legend, mixing to the voice of the waves the harmony of the verses of Omero and
Virgilio. It almost seems impossible to cohabit with the burden of the tied up
daily worries to the tumultuous modern life, because these places know how to
talk to the soul with accents and sweet tones. I am consolatory places and
obliosi. Another beautiful I bring: and' that of Marina of Camerota, with his
Punta degli Infreschi. It now opens in front of us the ample gulf of Policastro
but we have to veer for going up again the sourrest zone, but also the most
elevated, almost inaccessible, that and' the mountainous territory of Campania. |
